Allow me to elaborate a bit more on my other posts.
If you are a seasonal employee, good luck actually getting time off in the summer. Without using deceptive tactics.
Why can't Seasonal employees be like the rest of society.
If you would like to go away for a few days, you have to be deceptive. Hitting *67, and calling in sick from a campground, cottage, wherever you may be.
Let's face it, everyone has done it, and will probably do it again.
It will help not only union members, but also management, if sick time is reclassified as personal days.
How will this help?
Employees:
No more hitting *67 calling in sick.
Better quality of life.
Fewer, "you have to come in, there is nobody to cover the shift" calls at 7am.
Management:
Fewer, "it's a nice day, screw work, I'm calling in sick" calls. Especially if a worker knows they have a trip planned for a later time.
Fewer sick calls for marginal sickness, "I have a sore throat" for same reason as above.
More shifts are covered in advance, much less calling around to cover shifts.
Fewer instances of "I just earned a sick day, therefore I'm not coming in".
This is a win, win, situation. I believe it will actually cut down on last minute absences. And a much larger percentage of last minute absences will be for legitimate reasons.
